Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 53 Welcoming guests: "Let all guests who arrive be welcomed as Christ"
Pope Francis said at the audience for the 125th anniversary of the Benedictine Confederation: the charism of welcome is "very precious for the new evangelization, because it gives you the opportunity to welcome Christ in every person who arrives, helping those who seek God to receive the spiritual gifts He has in store for each of us.”
Community of San Ruggero experiences hospitality in this style, which is why it is available both to tourists who want to visit the Church or to school groups who come to delve deeper into the theme of Monasticism studied at school.
To make the cultural heritage of the Monastery more available to all, we decided to participate in a call for tenders from the Puglia Region which allowed us to create rooms in disused environments suitable for the use of the library and the many other resources whose history almost thousand years of the monastery endowed it.
For more religious hospitality, attached to the Monastery there is the guesthouse which allows us to welcome both groups, families or individuals. Thus, those who wish can come and experience a few days of prayer, silence and reflection, sharing the divine office and liturgical celebrations with the monastic community. We offer guests the possibility of an encounter with God in meditation on his Word, in prayer, in participation in the mystery of Christ celebrated in the liturgy.
The presence and accompaniment of a nun can be of help for the personal lectio and participation in the liturgy as well as allowing for a spiritual discussion and discussion.
Groups will be able to use the rooms for daytime retreats in self-management or with the service of the monastic community both for meals and for moments of sharing and/or testimony.
The guesthouse building includes: a large kitchen, another living room and an entrance with sofas and services on the ground floor. Upstairs there are six air-conditioned bedrooms and all equipped with services.
There is then a room for prayer or meetings. If the groups are large or a short, catechetical meeting is requested, the Church can also be used.
No tuition is set; in a spirit of fraternal sharing we ask that everyone leave an offering according to their possibilities, to allow us to continue this service.
Finally, hospitality/reception also includes the possibility of simple spiritual conversations.
In all these ways we nuns intend to live, re-actualizing it in the light of the needs of the Church and the world today, that spirit of welcome that already moved our Blessed Holy Father
